Know Your Gold

You Probably Know Your 4 C's
But Do You Know Your 4 G's

This refers to your choice in Gold. All jewelry is not created equal but each type does serve a purpose - especially when you're budget shopping but want to stay on trend. Here, we break down what's what for you to easily be able to distinguish the differences.

Gold Plated

Gold Plating:
  • Lowest Cost | Most Affordable
  • Will eventually tarnish | Will wear away easily
  • May irritate sensitive skin | Base metal is usually copper but can also be brass, silver, steel etc...
  • Very thin layer of gold | Should Never Get Wet
  • Must be removed daily and wiped clean with a soft cloth

Gold Vermeil

Gold Vermeil:
  • Very Affordable | Good Quality
  • More Hypoallergenic because it's core metal is 925 sterling silver - so people with metal allergies can wear it safely
  • Good for everyday wear but should be removed and wiped daily with a soft cloth
  • Does Not Tarnish; gold does not wear off but can scuff and nick exposing base metal over time
  • Has a thick layer of gold [at least 2.5 microns] applied by an electroplating process; making it a bit more durable than it's counterparts
  • Vermeil is a Great Choice for those who want something to wear daily without tarnishing, while still being affordable

Gold FilledGold Filled:

  • Affordable | Better Quality
  • Hypoallergenic Outside | Good for everyday wear but should be removed and wiped daily with a soft cloth
  • Won't tarnish, but gold can but can scuff and nick exposing core metal over time - usually jeweler's brass and sometimes copper
  • Base metal is applied with a pressure and heat bonding process
  • Very thick layer of gold [at least 5% of total weight] it’s higher quality than vermeil as it contains more gold, but still not as expensive as solid gold

Solid GoldSolid Gold:

  • 100% Pure Gold | Highest Cost
  • Best quality [24k/14k/18k]
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Good for everyday wear
  • Can get wet | Softest Metal
  • Won't ever tarnish or wear away but can be scratched and scuffed
  • Should be cleaned regularly to maintain cleanliness and it's original shine
